چکیده

Use of virtual machines (VM), which concept was introduced by IBM, are increasingly due its benefits like better resource utilization and ease system manageability. Although, virtualization of I/O devices can introduce an overhead due to layer increment between VM and host. This penalty is specially wrong when the requested devices have high sustained thoughput and/or low latency. An excellent example of a device that requires both characteristics is a network interface card (NIC). In this work, VMWare Virtual Machine Monitor Network Subsystem is studied and measured to provide a measure of its introduced overhead.

Virtualizing I/O Devices on VMware Workstation's Hosted Virtual Machine Monitor

Virtual machines were developed by IBM in the 1960’s to provide concurrent, interactive access to a mainframe computer. Each virtual machine is a replica of the underlying physical machine and users are given the illusion of running directly on the physical machine. Virtual machines also provide benefits like isolation and resource sharing, and the ability to run multiple flavors and configurat...

Accountable Virtual Machines

In this paper, we introduce accountable virtual machines (AVMs). Like ordinary virtual machines, AVMs can execute binary software images in a virtualized copy of a computer system; in addition, they can record non-repudiable information that allows auditors to subsequently check whether the software behaved as intended. AVMs provide strong accountability, which is important, for instance, in di...

Evaluating Performance of Virtual Machines

Virtualization is becoming increasingly popular, both for servers as well as desktop systems. It is a core technology of the IT applications such as green IT and cloud computing. Operating system which directly communicates with system hardware is host operating system and Operating system which runs on hypervisor type-2 is guest (virtual) operating system. Performance of the guest (virtual) op...

Evaluating Xen, VMware, and OpenVZ Virtualization Platforms for Network Virtualization

Network virtualization is a technique that allows having multiple concurrent isolated networks sharing physical network resources. This work analyzes the main available virtualization platforms, Xen, OpenVZ, and VMware, for network virtualization. We compare their virtualization techniques, achieved performance in virtualizing computational resources and appropriateness for usage in a virtual n...
